The Waldorf curriculum in third and fourth grade reflects the students' increasing abilities to work with more complex and abstract concepts. One way these developmental changes are reflected in their work is through the practice of drawing interwoven forms, such as Celtic knots. Carefully following patterns of under and over, and creating symmetry, proportion, and balance in these drawings helps strengthen the students' capacities for planning, precision, and perseverance. Another dimension of this work is learning to tie actual knots that can then be put to practical use. Using these skills, Grade 3/4 has learned to tie hitches and square knots to make a macrame plant holder using bright yellow and orange rope.
